Q: Are Summit Academy students required to wear uniforms?
A: We don’t have a uniform. At Summit Academy Flat Rock and Summit Academy North Elementary, solid collared shirts are required with solid pants, skirts or jeans. At Summit Academy North Middle School and High School, students wear solid color shirts with collars and non-denim pants or skirts in good repair.
Q: Do you have transportation?
A:Yes. We offer bus "hubs" at local Meijer stores as well as other locations. Bus service is available on a first come, first served basis. In addition, we have carpool lists at each building.
Q: Do you offer before and after school care?
A: Yes. Summit Academy Flat Rock is open for care from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. for grades K-8. Weekly rates are free for Kindergarten, $35 for grades 1–5 and $10 for grades 6–8. Summit Academy North Elementary is open for care from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. for grades K–5. The weekly rate is $35 per student. We offer after school extension at Summit Academy North Middle School free of charge until 6:00 p.m.
Q: Are you a school of choice? Can my child attend if we live outside the city where the schools are located?
A: We are a tuition-free public school academy. The only residency requirement is that you live in the state of Michigan.
Q: Do you offer tutoring?
A: We offer tutoring to enrolled students each day after school. We also provide many opportunities to support student needs throughout the school day with additional reading and math classes, as well as additional staff to work with students needing extra support.
Q: What are the school hours?
A: Summit Academy Flat Rock K-87:50 a.m.–2:50 p.m.
Summit Academy North Elementary K-5 7:50 a.m.–2:50 p.m.
Summit Academy North Middle School 7:55 a.m.–3:00 p.m.
Summit Academy North High School 7:55 a.m.–3:00 p.m.
Q: Is there a cost for Tuition?
A: No. We are a tuition-free Public Michigan Charter School.
Q: Is there a waiting list or lottery?
A: Each year following open enrollment, if we have enough seats for the students that apply, all students are enrolled. If we have more applications than we have seats, we do have a lottery or random selection drawing. The waitlist is established from the drawing and is used throughout the year.
Q: Does Summit offer sports?
A: Yes! We offer a large variety of sports for all grade levels. We participate in MHSAA athletics at our middle school and high school. We offer many team sports for grades 7–12. We also offer Little Dragons sports programs from grades K–6. You can see all our sports team at summitdragons.com.
Q: Do you offer Advanced Placement and Honors Classes?
A: Yes. We offer Honors Classes starting in 6th grade and AP classes starting in 9th grade. We also offer special opportunities for gifted students.
Q: What is the difference between a traditional public school and a public school academy?
A: Charter Schools were created to offer a different choice to families. We are authorized by Central Michigan University. They provide additional support and oversight.
Q: Do you have highly qualified teachers?
A: YES. 100% of our teaching staff are certified teachers who are highly qualified to teach the subject they are teaching. Their certification is reviewed and audited by the state annually.
Q: Do you have Dual Enrollment?
A: We do have dual enrollment opportunities for eligible students in high school at local colleges and universities.
Q: What is the behavior of the students like?
A: All Summit Academy and Summit Academy North Schools have strict codes of conduct. We have zero-tolerance policies regarding bullying.
Q: What extracurricular activities do you have for the elementary students?
A: Our elementary schools offer a variety of options. Summit Academy Elementary offers after school gymnastics, hip-hop dancing, jump rope club, sign language, journalism, student council, National Junior Honor Society, and karate. Summit Academy North Elementary offers many after school theme days, including holiday celebrations, Glow in the Dark Party, fiestas, etc. In addition, we offer National Elementary Honor Society and Job Corp. Summit Academy North High School and Middle School offer many after school clubs and activities.
Q: Where do the students eat lunch?
A: The elementary students eat lunch in their classroom with their teacher. The middle school and high school students eat lunch in the cafeteria.
Q: What specials classes do they have?
A: Summit Academy K–8 offers Physical Education, STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math), Music and Band. Summit Academy North K–5 offers Music, Band, Spanish, Physical Education, STEAM and Library/Technology.
Q: Do you offer a foreign language?
A: Yes. Summit Academy North Elementary offers Spanish for K–5. Summit Academy North High School offers Spanish and an extensive variety of online options, such as American Sign Language, German, French and Mandarin.
Q: What is Looping?
A: This applies to elementary classes. Looping is when students have the same teacher for consecutive years. As the student is promoted, the teacher moves with them. This allows the teacher to truly get to know the children and their families. The students in grades 1-2 and grades 3-4 are team-taught.
Q: Do you offer Special Education?
